I have been re-reading some of Steven Levine’s most excellent work on death and dying in reparation for a presentation I made on Sunday on the subject to a group of people in retirement who were looking to understand what lay before them..
“If there is a single definition of healing it is to enter with mercy and awareness those pains, mental and physical, from which we have withdrawn in judgment and dismay. ” ― Stephen Levine, A Year to Live: How to Live This Year as If It Were Your Last
This quote comes from his book, “A Year to Live: How to Live This Year as If It Were Your Last.”
And that suggestion that we live this year as if it were our last is very powerful. The person who invited us to present lost a close friend just 2 days before our presentation in a freak bicycle accident – he was struck my a motorist – he was 46. A healthy, active, universally-beloved close friend of our family died just yesterday morning of a massive stroke. And just last summer my niece lost her husband in a boating accident with 2 young kids to now raise by herself.
But this quote does not speak to the issue of dying, it speaks to the issue of healing – which is surely something we want to accomplish before we draw our final breath, and most of us would like to get it done way before then so we can life happier, more fulfilled lives.
So, how do we enter our mental and physical pains with mercy and awareness? This is a brief post, so I am not going to go through an entire process today, merely to suggest you enter into a meditative state, invoke LOVE into your heart from whatever Source you believe in, and very simply, breathe that LOVE into the hurt in your mind’s eye – first to your entire body and especially wherever in the body you FEEL the hurt, but also into everyone and everything involved..
The Light that comes to this process from it being involved in preparing to die is that it puts everything into perspective. Soon enough (even if it’s a long time from now) it won’t matter who or what caused you pain here on this plane of existence…you will be letting it all go with great love. Why hold onto it now?
Namaste, I love you
