I watch with great dismay as education in the US becomes more and more about job training and less and less about personhood or even citizenship training. We are MUCH MORE than our jobs, and we must even be prepared to change career tracks multiple times in out lives – this penny-pinching and “teaching to the multiple choice test” does not serve us well. I mean who teaches them about nuance? What if 3 out of 4 answers could have an argument to support them??? Who teaches them integrity, where do they learn to debate different sides of issues so they are prepared to live with so many different peoples in this big world.
